Locked Horns!
Christians at War with the Flesh

Good vs. Evil is the oldest battle of mankind since... well, since the dawn of man! It started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve (Good) who found themselves in a battle of wits with a serpent (Evil). Man fell on that day, and it would take the coming of our beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, to redeem us from the bondage that, because of sin, we landed in. What was the sin that caused man to fall? The sin that caused man to fall was disobedience to God. (Read Genesis 2:15-17.)  Also, remember that obedience (to God) is better than sacrifice. 1 Samuel 15:22

Those who are born again, should be free from sin--and technically, we are! (Read John 8:31-36) Yet, we often find ourselves in a battle against sin. We are at war with the flesh!

What is meant by FLESH?

Galatians 5:17 tells us that the flesh lusts (wars or desires) against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, much like two animals fighting for dominance. Who will win? You decide.

Which one--Spirit or flesh--will you give the most attention to?

Now the works of the flesh show up through adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness (or lasciviousness), idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy murders, drunkenness, orgies and the like. (Galatians 5:19-21)

It is not uncommon for men and women to endure this conflict. Surely, we prefer to have control over the flesh--and we can through fasting and prayer, but do not think less of yourself because of the struggle. The fact that you struggle is actually a good sign. It indicates to God that you are not in agreement with evil doings--with the flesh and this pleases God.

If ever you stop struggling against the flesh, that is a sign that you are in agreement with it (sin) and that is when the Lord will chasten you.

Deal with your issue(s) in private, with no one looking. Don't let your sin get exposed to everyone. If you know you have a lust problem or adultery, etc., pray and ask the Lord to forgive you and help you.

If we acknowledge our sin, the Lord is faithful to forgive us. (Psalm 32:5) It's the hiding of sin that displeases the Lord, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of the Lord. (Romans 3:23)

God made a way for us to escape sin and the impending judgment of hell that follows it. If you have not already, please take this time to come to Jesus. There is no time like now! Bypass hell and go to heaven. Click here for the prayer of Salvation.

The battle against the flesh will be present so long as we are in these earthen vessels, however, below are a few tips to help you win... war-by-war, day-by-day over the flesh:

  • Pray - Tell the Lord in secret, in your own prayer closet (your car, bedroom, bathroom, office, etc.) what you are struggling with and ask for His help. This will help you win the war over each area while also building upon your relationship with God.

  • Fast - Set aside a few hours... a day, a week or whatever you can handle to omit food or a particular food. Do not be afraid to fast. You don't have to hurt yourself. If all you can do is a few hours, God will bless your fast. If you can do more time--all the better. Fasting is about denying the flesh so that the Spirit rules. Fasting for deliverance (over a fleshly issue) is discussed in Isaiah 58:6. Read it and stand on it* for strength and to gain control over the flesh (wickedness).

  • Try to avoid or limit your interaction with people or things that pull you into the area of the flesh in which you are struggling until you can resist. Sometimes, you'll have to pray for God to move people out of your life. (Matthew 5:29)

  • Find a Scripture to quote when you are tempted. Use the Scripture as a defense. So, if you look upon others and find yourself lusting, recite your Scripture in your mind. It could be something like: Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee. (Isaiah 26:3)

Note: The Scripture doesn't have to match the issue. The purpose of the Scripture is to put your mind on whatsoever is true, whatsoever is just, whatsoever is pure--think on these things. (Read Philippians 4:8)
